Why choose a photoelectric smoke alarm?

All smoke alarms in our range use photoelectric (optical) detection, which is widely regarded as the most effective technology for detecting the slow-burning, smouldering fires that are most common in residential settings. Unlike ionisation alarms, photoelectric alarms are less likely to trigger false alerts from cooking or steam — meaning fewer nuisance alarms and greater confidence that when it sounds, it matters.

Standalone vs wireless: Which do I need?

Standalone alarms are the right choice for existing homes and rental properties where no interconnection is required. If you’re building a new home or undertaking a consented renovation, current NZ Building Code requirements mean you’ll need wireless interconnected alarms instead. Not sure which applies to you? See our NZ Building Code guidance or browse our wireless interconnected range.

Frequently asked questions

What is a photoelectric smoke alarm?
A photoelectric (or optical) smoke alarm uses a light beam inside a sensing chamber to detect smoke particles. When smoke enters the chamber, it scatters the light beam and triggers the alarm. This technology is particularly effective at detecting slow, smouldering fires — the type most likely to occur in bedrooms and living areas at night.
No. Standalone battery-operated smoke alarms can be installed by anyone — they simply click into a ceiling-mounted base with no wiring required. If you’re installing a mains-powered smoke alarm, a registered electrician is required.
All standalone smoke alarms in our range feature a 10-year sealed lithium battery. The battery cannot be removed or replaced — the alarm is designed to last the full 10 years, after which the whole unit should be replaced.
No. Standalone alarms operate independently and cannot be linked to a wireless interconnected system. If you need alarms that communicate with each other, browse our wireless interconnected range.
